Ayurvedic approach in the management of piles
Piles is a very painful disease wherein the internal and external veins of the anal region become varicose. The veins can be seen protruding from the anal area.
Lifestyle triggers:
- Regular intake of junk food.
- Absence of dietary fibers in the food.
- Sitting or standing work for most of the time of the day.
- Lack of regular exercise regimen.
- Chronic constipation and other bowel disorders.
- Forceful excretion of faeces.
- Strenuous work like weight lifting etc.
- Excessive Obesity.
- Mental Stress.
Other causes:
- Carcinoma (cancer) rectum.
- Difficulty in urination.
Symptoms of Piles:
- Bleeding during passing stools.
- Anemia due to profuse bleeding.
- Itching and/or pain in the rectal region.
- Problematic Sitting.
Do’s:
- Drink lot of water (average 5 liters /day).
- Eat food which is rich in dietary fibers.
- Have enough sleep in nights.
- Maintain Oral and Anal hygiene.
- Reduce weight.
Don’ts:
- Avoid having spicy, fried and stale or junk food.
- Avoid liquor, smoking and non -vegetarian diet.
- Don’t put pressure during defecation.
- Avoid Sitting for a long duration on hard surface.
- Stop anal coitus.
Objective of ayurvedic treatment:
- Shrinkage of pile mass and prevention of bleeding in the pile mass.
- Cure of itching, inflammation and infection in anal region.

What is ksarasutra?
The most popular method devised by ancient acharyas to treat this disease is ksarasutra, the full proof method available to cure fistula-in-ano.
Ksara-sutra is a medicated thread which is prepared by applying the coatings of apamargkshara( Achyranthes Aspera), haridrachurna(powder of turmeric/curcuma longa) etc. with snuhiksheer ( Euphorbia nerifolia) as binding agent. The thread is then sterilized by U V Radiation.
